A tough loss for the Botany Swarm saw the Canterbury Red Devils pick up a 5-1 victory in Auckland Sunday evening, and the Toa Kauhanga Riri Tio return to the South Island with them.
The first period saw plenty of whistles for both sides, but the Swarm took the brunt of them initially, with three consecutive penalties which kept the penalty killers busy. Jamie Lawrence was able to capitalise on one of the powerplays to give the Devils the first goal. Some strong offensive pressure from the Swarm saw them equalise shortly afterwards as Oliver Hay picked up a goal crashing the net to grab a rebound.
The Swarm worked to keep up the pressure, but Dean Tonks was able to work into the slot area and scored the second goal for the Red Devils.
The Swarm started the period with a carry-over penalty but the Red Devils penalty killing was too strong, giving them a perfect record in that for the Sunday. The Red Devils were able to score again at even strength after Brent Vandenberg took advantage of a defensive misplay, then picked up their fourth as Evan Zych scored midway through the period.
Another carry-over penalty for the start of the third period saw the Swarm get their chances on the powerplay, but Canterbury netminder Michael Coleman was impassible, and the Devils added a fifth goal from captain Hayden Argyle in the third period to ice it.
The Swarm will be back in action next weekend, playing their final road games of the regular season against the Dunedin Thunder at 4.30pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday.
