Saturday's match against the Dunedin Thunder was heart-breakingly close, with a final score of 6-5 seeing the Thunder take the regulation win and leaving the Swarm's backs against the wall in their quest to make the playoffs.
The Swarm were first on the board, scoring at even strength as defenseman Garrett Ferguson tipped a shot past Dunedin Thunder goalie Matt Canaday early in the first period. The Thunder were able to equalise a few minutes later, as Martin Porkorny picked up the puck in the slot and angled it past the Swarm's Nicklas Marschall.
The Swarm were first on the board again, as Brandon Contratto capitalised on some great offensive zone pressure midway through the period, slotting the puck past Canaday. The Thunder equalised three minutes later, as Jesse Kantanen scored. The Thunder picked up the go-ahead goal as Ben Gavoille scored off the rush to put the home side up 3-2. The Swarm equalised themselves a few minutes later, as Keegan Harenett scored on a beauty from the slot, before the Thunder took the lead again, with Andre Robichaud scoring on an odd-man rush, before Gavoille scored again to give them a two goal lead. The Swarm pulled back within one in the last minute of the second as KC Ball put one top shelf off a perfect feed from Contratto.
A hard-fought third period saw the Swarm unable to regain the lead, with chances going both ways, but only one goal a side scored after a blistering second period. The Thunder's goal came on a short-handed breakaway from Gavoille, while the Swarm's goal was a powerplay tally for Oliver Hay.
