Since Craig Potter was a teenager, he has always been into ice hockey. He used to watch NHL and play EA sports hockey.
The Potters got into ice hockey in 2014, midway through the season when Hayden’s granddad, Deane took him along to a Botany Swarm game. Hayden came back buzzing about the game and that’s where he fell in love with the game. He went along to another game and meet some new friends at the rink.
When the next home game came along, Hayden asked his dad, Craig to go with him to watch a game and the ice hockey fever came back and Craig was hooked again.
Hayden’s new friends were already playing hockey and said for him to come down to learn to play and try out. After Hayden had some skating lessons and then went onto learn to play, he hasn’t looked back.
A year later, younger brother Riley also had a period of learn to play and loved it as well. Riley also loved being on the ice with big brother, Hayden.
Hayden has now been playing now for four years and has just started playing in the Bantam league. In his first year and has scored two assists.
Craig started playing hockey for the first time this year after three seasons helping and watching Hayden play. In May last year, Hayden gave Craig the push he needed – to enrol in skating lessons and this is where he met his good friend Kevin Kretschmar. Kevin was learning to skate for the same reasons – they didn’t want to just watch hockey, but wanted to play the game too. The two good mates are now playing for the Scorpions in the SNC-C league competition.
Craig, Hayden and Riley have been going along to the Swarm games for the past three years and are big supporters of the team. They always buy their tickets through GrabOne each year to secure a good deal and make sure that they get to see all games for a good price.
The family have also got to meet some really good friends including Elizabeth Hay and the Hay Hockey brothers. Elizabeth started bringing the team’s mascot – a hockey bear along to the Swarm games a few years ago and then she asked the boys to look after him. The mascot has come to every games since.
Hayden has, more recently been helping out Josh Kretschmar with the game live stream when the Swarm are playing at home. He helps change the score, and keeps statistics of shots on goal, etc. He loves this new role which he has been given.
Hayden’s favourite Swarm players are Andrew Hay (#13) and Jordan Challis (#22). Riley’s favourite Swarm players are Michael Hopkinson (GK) and Alex Polozov(#10).
The Botany Swarm are so grateful for having fans like the Potters at every home game and look forward to seeing them again during the 2019 season.
